Karunai Illam

This center is exclusively a home for discarded destitute women who were found on the streets.  Most of them are picked up as dying destitutes without any care and attention.

We receive telephone messages and we rescue them. They are given the necessary treatment, and entertainment programmes are conducted to keep them engaged. There are about 150 destitutes in this unit. At Karunai Illam they are given a clean bath, medical and psychiatric treatment counseling and nutritious food.

Sometimes the dying destitutes do recover and later live as residents.  But some of them suffer from various infections, diseases like TB, Cancer, Leprosy, AIDS and they are being provided with palliative care.

Those who die are given a respectable cremation, and those who are here live with dignity and respect.

Jotheeshwar was found begging at Coimbatore and was picked by our social workers.  She is 70 years and has been driven out of her family.  She is mentally sick and her relatives took all her property and house away.  It was a pathetic incident; she was discarded from her family.

This is an unknown lady who was found dead near Mathews Church at Chennai K.K.Nagar.  Her background details were not known and there was a child of 1 ˝  years who had nobody to attend to.  She was given a descent burial and her child Mathew is under our care

Valli is 56 years, visually handicapped person found in a dying condition at Central Railway Station.  She saw the ray of hope at  Karunai Illam and now she has recovered from her illness.  She was dying out of hunger and malnutrition.  The irony is she is also deaf and dumb.

Suman, Mariamma, Lakshmi, all are similar destitutes who found shelter and now they are in the process of recovery.

Vedamma was found sick and dying in a bus stand.  It was days, since she had any food and water and her background was a pathetic one.  She is basically an orphan worked as a domestic maid in a landlord’s family for 70 years.  She has brought up 3 generations of   children.  She neither went to school nor got married  and only lived for others until she was worn out.  One fine day the watch man of the house was instructed to take her and leave at the bus stand.  He took her under the pretext of going to a hospital and dumped her near the bus stand. She has not committed any mistake in her life, but she turned out to be a napkin for others. She is also recovering from her emotional scars.
