Karunai
Illam
This
center is exclusively a home for discarded destitute women who were found
on the streets. Most of them
are picked up as dying destitutes without any care and attention.
We
receive telephone messages and we rescue them. They are
given the necessary treatment, and entertainment programmes are conducted to keep them engaged. There are about 150 destitutes in this unit.
At Karunai Illam they are given a clean bath, medical and
psychiatric treatment counseling and nutritious food.
Sometimes
the dying destitutes do recover and later live as residents.
But some of them suffer from various infections, diseases like TB,
Cancer, Leprosy, AIDS and they are being provided with palliative care.
Those
who die are given a respectable cremation, and those who are here live
with dignity and respect.

Vedamma
was found sick and dying in a bus stand.
It was days, since she had any food and water and her background was a
pathetic one. She is
basically an orphan worked as a domestic maid in a landlord’s
family for 70 years. She
has brought up 3 generations of children. She
neither went to school nor got married and only lived for others
until she was worn out. One
fine day the watch man of the house was instructed to take her and
leave at the bus stand. He
took her under the pretext of going to a hospital and dumped her
near the bus stand. She
has not committed any mistake in her life, but she turned out to be a
napkin for others. She is also recovering from her emotional scars. |
