As caretakers of children, Udavum Karangal has strongly felt the need to provide adequate support - both emotional and educational. Until 3 years ago, the children were sent to Government & Corporation schools. As the number of school going children under residential care was increasing steadily, a need for good education was becoming imperative.

The Ramakrishna Vidya Niketan (RVN) made its modest beginnings, with just a few classrooms. Today RVN is a well-established school, covering nearly 32 neighbouring villages, and children are providreceive value based education, free of cost upto the 12th standard level. Today there are around 1400 children benefiting from the school.

»  Both English (to make our children compete equally with other outside private school children) & Tamil (the local vernacular - which is easy for the poverty stricken/ economically backward children to understand & grasp their studies, and to have a liking towards education) are the medium of instruction.
»  The school also has a full-fledged Library, and qualified tutors & trained assistants, who guide and encourage the students to learn more than what they are taught in their regular classes.
»  Students are encouraged to participate in interactive sports and talent competitions with other city schools to exhibit their talents and creative skills.

A sizable percentage of abandoned children are mentally retarded, spastics or handicapped. Our Special Education Centre - BALAMITHRA, in Tiruverkadu aims to provide special skills and make such children self-sufficient.

Through psychiatric Interviews and counseling sessions IQ and aptitude levels are ascertained, so that those who can be trained and educated receive the necessary assistance .Physiotherapy and yoga classes are conducted for the spastic children, to improve their personality and overcome their disabilities.
