At present our school - The Ramakrishna Vidya Niketan, functions only up to the 9th standard level. The school plans to extend its educational arm up to the +2 level, and to more such needy children. At present the students from the neighbouring community come from 32 villages, and our school plans to cover the remaining 14 villages in this jurisdiction.

There will be a Science Laboratory for the higher secondary students so that they can have practical experience of what they learn. This will help the students to have a tangible exposure of their curriculum by creating interest in their studies, and makes their education more purposeful and meaningful. There will also be a separate Computer Institute, which will form part of their regular academics. The school also plans to start a Vocational Training Institute for the out going students and to the secondary grade dropouts, and impart special skills and practical training in activities like printing, tailoring, candle-making and type-writing etc.. so that they can be self-reliant and self-dependent.

Udavum Karangal have also planned to start a training institute in the field of Social Work. This will be a 2 year diploma course combined with practical training in avenues like the infant care, geriatric care, psychiatric social work, paliative care and counseling.

Udavum Karangal presently runs an out-patient centre for general medicine and psychiatry in Tiruverkadu. In & around these villages there doesnt exist even a single hospital, and the people from these areas have to travel long, even for minor health hazards. We have planned for a rural based Community Health cum Welfare Centre, with an in-patient capacity for 100 patients.

Special emphasis will be on diet & nutrition, community based health care, mother & child care, and other public welfare schemes. This Community Health Centre will render its services free, to the poor & economically backward families from the neighbouring villages. This health centre plans to have its own specialities in the fields of Dental, Leprosy & dermatology, psychiatry, neurology, ENT and opthalmology. Referral services are also planned for cases related to nephrology, cardiology, urology and other problems.

Presently the Vocational Training Centre helps rehabilitate the patients by imparting training skills in activities like, printing, tailoring, carpentry, candle making, agarbathis & shampoo making. We plan to improve on these services and to extend these facilities to secondary grade students and school dropouts. More activities like soft-doll making, handloom weaving, soap & phenol making, straw mats & basket making, bamboo furnitures etc.. are also planned to be included in our training institute.

Presently it houses and cares for more than 1800 residents, and this family of orphans and destitutes in Udavum Karangal keeps growing each day.

As the number of school going children are on the rise, there is a need for more individual houses in our GOKULAM colony. At present, there is a plan for another 6 additional houses in this unit. A Rehabilitation centre, for the destitute mentally ill, has been set up near Coimbatore on the Pollachi - Coimbatore highway. A plan for 10 individual residential blocks, each accomodating 20 patients, is underway. Construction has started in a small way, but this project is delayed for want of funds.
