Let them be victims of Nature… not victims of neglect

The tidal waves (tsunami) that hit the Tamil Nadu coast on the 26th December 2004 following an earthquake in the sea-bed of Indonesian coast, has devastated the people living in the coastal areas. This unexpected calamity has shaken the emotion of every Indian. Thousands have lost their kith and kin, lost their homes and belongings. People are yet to recover from the shock of witnessing the sufferings of the victims.

The way the dead bodies are getting washed up on our beaches, and the impossible task of burying them without delay tell us each day of the still unravelling dimensions of this massive tragedy.

A number of them are in crossroads not knowing what to do next. Let them be the victims of nature but not victims of neglect. The task of caring for the victims is going to be long as well as sad. Whatever it takes, we need to provide the material and emotional support to those who have suffered the unimaginable.

Udavum Karangal, an ISO certified welfare organization with more than two decades of experience in service and caring 2000 residents at present, has decided to involve in handling this crisis management. We intend providing support and care at four levels.

 1. EMERGENCY RELIEF:

To provide basic requirements and essentials for the people who have survived the tragedy. This could be in terms of providing safe drinking water, medicines, rice, household utensils, blankets and new clothes.

 2. PROVIDING RESIDENTIAL CARE:

Udavum Karangal has also come forward to admit people who have been misplaced, orphan children, persons who are in a state of shock and also women in distress. We have made press-release and contacted all the officials who are handling these issues, so that affected people can get immediate shelter and a sense of security.

3. LONG TERM REHABILITATION SERVICES:

Udavum Karangal has decided to adopt few villages near Chidambaram and Cuddalore and intend providing low cost housing facility to 500 families (worth Rs.15,000/- to Rs.20,000/- per house). [NOTE: In this regard, we would work on the guideline factor co-ordinating with the Government and Revenue Dept., to implement this project.]

4. LIVELIHOOD REHABILITATION:

A lot more is necessary to help the existing people to pick up their life all over again. This could include contribution towards fishing-nets, self- employment schemes and also providing livelihood rehabilitation.

The waves of your support can certainly reshape the life of these broken people. Come, join hands to help our fellow people. We invite the involvement of kindhearted persons, well wishers, Non-Resident Indians, Associations, Trusts, charities, organizations and all those who care “Life with Dignity”, to contribute meaningfully and extend support to the cause of the affected persons. Financial support is the most crucial need of the moment.
