Udavum Karangal has decided to reach out to more deserving
and neglected villages near Chidambaram and Cuddalore. Most of the coastal
areas are literally wiped away and people have lost not only their belongings
but also many precious lives. The villages, which we have identified, are 20
k.m. away from Chidambaram in northeast direction. The natives of these
villages are traditionally fishermen community of 2nd and 3rd generation. Their
livelihood consists of fishing and marketing. Most of the families have middle
class life with good amenities and some of their children are also partially
educated. They are not living in hutment but in moderate houses and leading a
dignified life. Unfortunately, all these villages have been totally washed away
and there are only trees, which indicate the presence of a village but not a
house. Details of some of the affected villages we have identified are as

The local leaders and also the Village Heads of each
village have elicited the above statistics. Presently, all these people have
been sheltered in schools, chowltries, marriage halls and temporary camps. They
are presently living in a place near Chidambaram called KILLAI camp. Whatever
emergency relief we are extending, we need to provide them in the camp. We are
coordinating with the District Collector and Government departments to extend
these facilities in accordance with their guidelines.
